About Robert

A former partner in the firm McCrank Stewart Johnson and previously Rendek McCrank, Bob has extensive experience in private practice and independent consulting.

After moving to Alberta and becoming a member of the Law Society of Alberta in 2010 Bob focused on corporate compliance program development, implementation and management. He developed and managed the Ethics and Anti-Corruption program of a Canadian exploration company with interests in nine countries. The program, verified by an independent audit firm and monitored by law enforcement authorities, ensured the compliance with the first (and at that time the only) Anti-Corruption order of a Canadian Court.

He also developed a Business Integrity Program for a Trinidad company active throughout the Caribbean. After report by an independent audit firm, the Inter American Development Bank confirmed that the program met the conditions for the company’s early release from debarment. In recognition of his role in developing effective Ethics and Anti-Corruption Compliance Programs, he has spoken at conferences on the obligations of businesses to implement robust programs and the practices necessary to avoid, mitigate or manage corruption risk. He believes that all businesses, whether operating internationally or domestically face similar risks that warrant similar protective measures.

An effective Compliance program has many components involving personnel in all parts of the organization. Each component must meet the standards now recognized by Canadian, US, British, EU and other jurisdictions and must be able to stand the scrutiny of law enforcement and independent audit.

Working closely with a client’s personnel and other advisers, Bob’s experience enables him to provide valuable advice and assistance in program development generally or for specific projects. The mobility rules for lawyers enable him to offer services including risk assessment, program development, implementation and training throughout Canada which may be beneficial where review of a client’s circumstances should be conducted within a privileged relationship.

Since returning to Saskatchewan in 2023, Bob’s practice is now focused primarily on private businesses, their succession and tax planning, and reorganization.
